The Crack Of Dawn Walkers A charming little story about a little girl who is excited about taking a walk with her grandfather without her little brother
This heartwarming picture book celebrates the special relationship that a little girl shares with her grandfather. Grandfather takes a neighborhood walk very early every Sunday morning. Sadie and her brother, Ben, take turns spending this special time with him. Young readers will appreciate the conversation and hot cocoa that the two enjoy, captured beautifully in the simple text and black and white sketches that accompany the story.
A girl walks to the bakery and the general store on an early, winter Sunday morning with her grandfather. She doesn't want to share the time with her younger brother, but the grandfather wants them all to walk together (virtue: sharing/compromise- ending is open-ended). Vivid descriptions of what a cold and quiet Sunday morning feels like.
Sadie and her grandfather, from the old country, go for an early Sunday stroll to pick up rolls and a newspaper and to stop for a hot drink on this cold wintry day. She and her brother alternate weekly so they can each have Grandfather to themselves.
A poignant moment captured in time. Sadie and her grandfather engage in their customary Sunday-morning stroll- running errands and enjoying the early morning peace of their snowy town.Overall, it's a very calm and sweet book. I'm not sure how much younger children will enjoy it, but reading it will surely bring back pleasant memories of time spent with your own grandparents.
I loved the illustrations, I loved the idea of capturing those special customs in families. The child's attitude is very realistic, so it was a good story, but I don't think it hit the mark in inspiring my kids to be above average.
An early morning snowy walk with Sadie and Grandpa evokes many warm memories in this reader. A favorite children's book to be returned to time and again.
