Sister of the Lionheart An unforgettable heroine in a novel of the CrusadesJoanna is the strong willed daughter of King Henry of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine Close to her brother Richard Lionheart she grew up at courts
Disappointing. Characters don't convince, littered with historical error - my favourite English history period so unfortunately I noticed a lot of those! I also misliked the title - for Joanna to be identified as her brother's sister when she had a pretty interesting life of her own.
A fine novel of a distant era. Characters real, plot adroit and historically correct. This world differed so much from ours, it illuminates the vast range of human societies, even those we think of as close to us. Can't wait for the next volume, with a woman of nobility going to the Crusades!
Once I gave up on this story having a plot or likeable characters, I found I could actually enjoy what is more historical fact than historical fiction. I think a stronger knowledge of the history of English kings may have helped too, as I had a lot of trouble keeping track of characters early on. Many references to events or people I'm sure would have made more sense to someone else. The author clearly knows her time period, though, and the setting is quite clear. There is a glossary in the back [...]
I really enjoyed this book about Joanna who is my number two favorite Plantagenet, Eleanor being number one. It was not a quick read, reason being that it had such historical depth , but it was very engrossing. There is not a great deal written about Joanna and her relationship with her parents, so this one was very much appreciated by me.Hilary Benford wrote a fine novel, and I am excited that there will be a sequel. Very much appreciated was the fine author's note, medieval glossary and geneal [...]
Unfortunately, it's flatly and unevenly written, completely missing the whole concept of 'show, don't tell' when writing. In the first few chapters, there's a feeling of having been written with an exam afterwards in mind, as though the author's going down a checklist of terms to make sure they all get used. If you'd like to know the girls' ages, do the math or wait until sixty-some pages in to know more than 'very young' as their words and actions range up and down the scale. (And no, this does [...]
I just couldn't get into it. It wasn't grabbing me.
