Enjoyable story. The mystery was a bit weak. I enjoyed the characters and the friendship between the MC and Matt. On the upside, no cop boyfriend and no romantic triangle
Really enjoyed this book. Liked the characters a lot and the way it was written. Will look for more books by Harper lin. Nice cupcake recipes too!
This was an adorable little cozy mystery. It was such a fast read and I liked that the plot wasn't drawn out or elaborate. I love that meeting Matty was sweet and light and never got all detailed and odd.
Kindle freebie at time of download-worth paying for.Francesca Amaro has returned to her hometown of Cape Bay, Massachusetts from big city living in New York following the death of her mother. Francesca takes great pride in running her late grandparents’ café and lives living in their old house, her childhood home, among all the family friends and neighbors. Sometimes though, the local busybodies are too much for Francesca! On her way home one day she discovers a neighbor, Mr. Cardosi slumped [...]
I decided to read this because it was a Cozy Mystery Cornerand as an added bonus was available today on for free.It was a fast and fun read, I read it this afternoon in a few hours, it's only novella length what the book lacks in length and the strength mystery plot, it makes up for in extremely likeable characters. So give it a try, like I said it's FREE today on so you have nothing to lose, except for a few hours of reading time.
I'm a fan of Harper Lin; I feel she tells a good story, with a good flow, relatable characters, and, yes, editing that was A-OK! To top it off, this series has a great setting; who wouldn't love a cozy cafe in a seaside setting, especially one that has been in the family for seventy years? There is the added bonus of the MC reconnecting to an old male childhood friend (albeit under sad and trying circumstances), and a slow but steady rebuilding of that friendship. I also liked that the MC starte [...]
This was a very enjoyable book. It was a fast read too. Francesca has moved back home where she is running the old family business. While out walking she stumbles across a dead body. He happens to be the father of a old high school friend. She then spends the book helping the deceased mans son Matt find the killer. The killer was a surprise but then the author really never gave many clues. With the ending the way that it was I will definitely be picking up the next book.
Honestly I was disappointed with this book.Firstly it took me ages to finish it, even though it was a quite short one, but I had to force my self to pick it up and continue. At some points I was so bored, that I even thought of dnfing it. Secondly, I quite like cozy mysteries, that are funny, fluffy and with a little bit of romance, but there were nothing interesting about this book. The mystery was poorly done, the main character Fran was 30 and something years old, but sometimes acted like she [...]
Good start to a new series. Francesca returns to her hometown after her mom dies to take over the family business. She ends up getting in the middle of a murder investigation by finding a neighbor's body while walking home from working at her family's coffee shop. I liked the characters. I enjoyed how seriously Fran was about investigating. It was also fun to see Matt and Fran reconnect. I plan to read the rest of the series.
Good cozy mysteries are getting hard to come by.I had such high hopes for this one, being a former barista and all HMMMMaybe I'll dig out some old manuscripts I started when I worked at the coffee shop. The story felt very unoriginal and flat to me. No humor. Quite depressing actually. It seemed to drag on with the tiny, unimportant stuff. But then rushed through some of the more important things. A writer should always know a little about the genre they are writing. For instance, it would help t [...]
AudioBook Review: Stars: Overall: 4 Narration 4 Story 4 Full of hope, humor and a rather conflicted sense of self from our heroine Francesca, she’s returned to Cape Bay Massachusetts to take over her family’s Italian Café, after living in New York for years. Francesca is strangely conflicted in her self-awareness: her self-revealing declarations often conflict with one another. It offers an intriguing entrée into her personality: her moods and her self-confidence seem to ebb and flow consi [...]
I got this book for free, through a special offer on the author's Facebook pageI read all of the Patisserie Mysteries series by Harper Lin, so I was excited to check out the first book of her new series, another cozy mystery set in a quiet beach town of Cape Bay.Francesca Amaro is a likeable, if not a little childish protagonist. She moves from New York back to her hometown, but even in such a peaceful town, she manages to stumble upon her dead neighbour's body. Things start heating up when it i [...]
More like 2-1/2 stars. I thought the story was actually a bit boring. The mystery was weak and the reason Francesca decides to start sleuthing instead of leaving it to the seemingly more than competent detective is pretty dumb. (Although oddly we don't see the detective doing any investigating. We only hear about it when Francesca talks with him once or twice.) Fran jumps to a lot of wrong conclusions proving she really doesn't know what she's doing. I know she's an amateur sleuth but she seems [...]
Cappuccinos, Cupcakes and a Corpse by Harper Lin is the first book in A Cape Bay Cafe Mystery series. After the death of her mother, Francesca Amaro returns to Cape Bay to run the family cafe, when she comes across the body of her neighbour who has been poisoned. A nice cozy mystery although the investigation was quite weak and conclusion abrupt. It kept my interest and I enjoyed the book but the killer seemed to come out of the blue and the ending seemed rushed.
Good cozy mystery, nothing too deep or heavy. Good for a quick read.
Sweet slow mystery. Very slow. Nothing to really drag you into it. Perfect when you want a little murder without all the stress.
I've always been a fan of mysteries but I'm realizing that I don't like amateur sleuths very much. It always seems ridiculous when they insert themselves into an investigation. Seriously, there are professionals that handle this stuff and they have access to far more information than the average person on the street. That being said, the heroine does get a pretty good dose of reality to that effect but then magically solves the case anyway. She is likable enough but the characters are not well d [...]
Cute, light story even though it's a "murder mystery " and it's a quick read. Good book to start after you finish reading a tedious one. Oh, and the recipes in back of the book are a sweet bonus
This was my first book by this author though I have a couple of hers in my TBR pile. It was a short but good cozy mystery.Francesca Amaro moved back home to take over her families Italian Cafe. They make the fancy coffees with the cool decorations in your foam. (never understood why people do that when you just drink it anywaylol) Anyway, she goes to check on a neighbor and finds him dead. He is a man she has none for a very long time and wants to find out who murdered him.Along with his son Mat [...]
I read this to fulfill the "cozy mystery" requirement of my 2017 reading challenge. My husband and I read this together and we both understand why it's called "cozy." It was the least suspenseful mystery we'd ever encountered and we were both disappointed in the reveal at the end. However, we liked the adorably incompetent protagonist who had a lot of hilarious inconsistencies and cluelessness. She'd call herself humble and two lines later, brag about how she makes better coffee than anyone else, [...]
Cappuccinos, Cupcakes & a Corpse(Cape Bay Cafe Mystery #1) by Harper LinI don't normally ready mystery books but not only was this a freebie on my Kindle but I have decided that I need to read more than just'chick-lit' books. I think this is 'chick'lit / light & fluffy' mystery, so I am on my way to reading a different genre. This was the first book by Harper Lin that I have read and I enjoyed it. It tells the story of Fran, who following the death of her mother has left New York City to [...]
This book, the first in the new Cape Bay Cafe mystery series by Harper Lin, was a perfect blend of lighthearted mystery, budding romance and sweet treats. The descriptions of the cafe were so good that I could smell the coffee and almost taste the chocolate goodness of the cupcakes.Culinary mystery series abound and Harper Lin's books rank among the top in the genre. The recipes included at the end, which has become de rigueur for these types of books, are ones that seem simple enough to follow [...]
I was really enjoying this book until about 65% of the way through it. While Francesca and Matty's relationship is probably the best part of this book, the mystery plot was incredibly weak. It took the entire novel for Francesca to realize she's a terrible detective and doesn't have the fainest clue what she's doing. Not only that but there was absolutely NO detective investing anything during the entire novel. It was perplexing to say the least. Then the fact that the main suspect just HAPPENS [...]
Good set up for the Cape Bay Café Mysteries as Francesca has returned to her hometown after the death of her mother. While walking home from the café she finds Mr. Cardosi dead on his back porch. She begins to investigate and finds out she's not as good a detective as she thinks she is.I enjoyed this book. I liked the first person point-of-view. The mystery was good. I did not figure it out until the end when it was practically spelt out for me. I had the who but the why did not come to me. Th [...]
I read this cozy on my Kindle. Fran has come home from NY to run her deceased mother's coffee shop. While taking a short cut home on afternoon, she discovers the body of her neighbor, sitting on a chair on his porch. His son is Matt, and Fran is there to comfort him when he learns that his father was murdered. Together (but mostly Fran) they investigate his murder and find the culprit, in the mean time growing closer. This book does have a sequel, but works as a stand alone also.
Cappuccinos, Cupcakes, and a Corpse( A CapeMatt and franccia. were childhood friends and after her mother died she took over the coffee shop her grandparents started. On her way home one day she took a short cut through the back yards of neighbors and found Matts grandfather dead and she can't let it go and her and Matt set out to find the culprit and the results is a new beginning with them great story can't believe it is such a great story read it quickly.
I really enjoyed reading this book, Once I picked it up I couldn't put it down. The characters and plot was awesome even tho I would have liked the police investigation to be mentioned more in the storyline I still enjoyed the book.
I might have liked this book a little more if the author hadn't wrote in the first chapter that Yankee fans are rude. Kind of off putting, if you ask me. Other than that, it was an okay book. A good read if you just want something quick and fun.
Nice cozy read.
Cute, but a little predictable. The setting and characters are interesting enough that I would read another one in the series to see how it develops
