This book caught my interest from the very beginning and didn't let up. Callista is an amazing young woman. She is strong and can take care of herself, but at the same time, there is a vulnerability about her that makes her intriguing and sympathetic. Her family was murdered, and she is out to find justice. She finds a deep magic inside her which helps her become a swordmaster and sets her apart from the rest of the cadets, thereby allowing her into the ranks of the Elite Guard. On her first ass [...]
Callista has spent two years at the academy learning to be one of the Elite Guard hoping to be a stepping stone to bring her closer to finding the one responsible for violently killing her loved family, whom she has vowed revenge on. She survived taking her family sword with her. The sword linked with each ancestor who owned it, and now her as well. Things go array on her first assignment in her trial period with the Elite Guard and Callista faces off with a pack of Shadowbeasts. Suffering a dea [...]

“Flame of Destiny” is a terrific read! I loved reading this book! It is an epic fantasy novel about a young woman, Callista, who wants revenge on the wizard who brutally killed her family. She joins the Elite Guard hoping it will be a means to an end, only to discover that this group of soldiers is less than trustworthy. When her first assignment goes horribly wrong, she is saved by Justin a ship’s captain, whose destiny becomes entwined with her own. It is up to them to rid the city of a [...]
I picked this book up at 11 one night and aside from some wanderings into the kitchen for snacks, didn't put it down until 7 the next morning. I loved this book!!!! Right from the start, you are drawn into a story of action and intrigue that never lets up. Callista is a brave and powerful heroine, one you can't help but root for. I loved having such a strong female main character. Then of course there's the "ship captain" Justin, who just has to be more than he seems. When he saves Callista's li [...]
I liked this book and the story and the whole idea. The main character was strong and good I just wished we had known more of her thoughts and feeling earlier on in the book. I love the romances in this book. It was sweet and subtle and grew slowly threw the conflict. There were things about the execution of the book that I didn't like. I don't think I like books that are from many people's point of view, I like to stick with the main character as much as possible and I hate bad guys thoughts. I [...]
Second book I've read of Colleen Helme and it didn't disappoint me. I can't wait until September when her third book comes out. Don't miss her writing. It's refreshingly unique.
I won this book on a First-Reads Giveaway. I enjoyed this book very much. It was really fast paced - but nicely paced as well. The storyline was good. I really liked the main character - Callista. I am definitely looking forward to the sequel and finding out how everything wraps up. My one complaint would be the font that was used - it was too small and a little too fancy for long periods of reading. Other than that it was a wonderful book.
I actually really enjoyed this. It reminded me of something I might have picked up when I was young and super into fantasy, but this was so well written it entertained me now. This is really a book for anyone- it's very clean and the story line is great. I'll definitely be picking up the sequel.
It was a good book! I loved that it was clean and still a really good story!
It had a good plot, but the writing was pretty uneven.
DNF at page 175 I tried, really. It had so much potential.
